It is often too easy for us as fans to take greatness for granted while it’s happening on the field. Greatness has been all we’ve seen from one member of the current Ravens roster. Is he on a Hall of Fame trajectory?
I remember sitting in front of the TV watching Billy Cundiff’s missed 32-yard field goal. It was one of those gimmie kicks that we all assume will be good. I will admit it, I cried after it happened. But who knew that was going to be a life-changing moment for both the Ravens and the fans?
Fast forward to the 2012 NFL Draft and there he was, Justin Tucker, undrafted. As I sit here thinking about how valuable Justin Tucker has been to the Ravens, I am shocked. Tucker, one of the greatest kickers of all time was also an undrafted player! When the Ravens found Tucker, it was like a blessing from the football gods.
The Ravens took a risk and gambled their future on the leg of an undrafted rookie. This decision proved to pay off as that leg took the team not only to the Super Bowl, but it helped them win it. After that season, the fans knew the Ravens had found someone special.
Tucker Highlights For The Ravens Include Some Big-Time Moments
During the 2013 season, Tucker kicked a 61-yard kick during a game against Detroit. This was not going to be the last time he tamed the Lions. He became the only kicker to kick a field goal from the 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60-yard lines in the same game! This was also the first year he made it to the Pro Bowl.
He went to his second Pro Bowl during the 2016 NFL Season after tying the NFL single-season record of making 10+ Field Goals from over 50 yards. In 2017 he became known as Mr. Automatic since Tucker made all of his 39 extra-point field goals. This made him All-Pro for the second time.
In 2018 Tucker became the first NFL player to make 30+ field goals in six seasons reinforcing his nickname Mr. Automatic. It was at this point when I, like many other Raven fans, became spoiled by having a player like this on the team. Whenever he took the field for either an extra point kick or a field goal, I knew there was a high chance that kick was going to be good.
Tucker hit four field goals during the Steelers game in the 2019 season including two 40+ yard field goals that would tie and win the game. This not only earned him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, but it made Raven fans everywhere bask in the glory of watching a rival lose. (We all know how much Raven fans loath the Steelers.) During this season, Tucker kicked a 49-yard field goal to win the game against the 49ers. In 2020, Tucker made a game-winning field goal against the Browns from 55 yards. This was a sweet victory since the Ravens won by a single point, 47-46.
Remember when I mentioned Tucker was a Lion tamer? He did it again in 2021 when he kicked an NFL record 66-yard field goal during the Lions game. This broke the previous record that he made at the same stadium during the 2013 season.
This kick was one of the greatest moments in football and it helped him earn a trip to his fifth Pro Bowl.
The days when I was nervous watching the field goal unit prepare for a kick are nevermore thanks to Mr. Tucker. All of the accomplishments that I have highlighted reinforce the fact that Justin Tucker is one of the greatest kickers of all time. He’s one of the best Ravens of all time, and he is why there is a leg in legendary!
